WitzEnd Podcast #25: Jon Arnold, Independent Analyst, J Arnold & Associates

February 4, 2020

Jon Arnold is an independent research analyst (J Arnold & Associates) in the communications technologies space. He joins the WitzEnd podcast to discuss his career in technology, starting his own podcast, and playing keyboard for the SIPtones. We play a fun trivia game at the end, and learn some fascinating facts about Canada. If you like what you’re reading, be sure to listen to the whole episode, linked at the bottom of this page.

Artificial intelligence is on Jon’s radar for 2020…

Jon told us that one of the most exciting trends he looks most forward to in 2020 is artificial intelligence (AI). He believes that AI has interesting applications in smart cities, medical research, and education. Jon is also concerned with the dark side of where AI can go, the potential risks that AI presents, and the need for more cybersecurity.

Writing, writing, and more writing…

Jon has two types of client bases. He writes for publishers, and he also provides custom work that he does for clients (vendors primarily). He currently writes for BC Strategies (about once a month), No Jitter (every six weeks), and he contributes to Tech Target (about three times a month).

Analysts are different from the media…

Clients can forget that analysts are different from the media. Jon mentioned that it is important companies understand why they are meeting with an analyst. Typically, analysts are not going to write a story after an introductory briefing; rather, they serve as a champion for a company’s brand. They help customers sort through the overwhelming number of players in an industry by providing market data and insight to popular trends. Before briefings, Witz works with clients to identify the value that their news brings to the customer, how it fits in the market, and how it aligns with the company business plan.

I’m in the band, man…

On a more personal note, we found out that Jon is involved with a band called the SIPtones. The band is comprised of a group of technology professionals that play together at the annual SCTC event, and they’ve made a name for themselves. They now play at multiple industry events – with Jon playing the keyboard. The WitzEnd podcast received a concert from Jon in the game round of our interview, so be sure to listen to the entire episode linked below.
