WitzEnd Podcast #24: Mike Vizard, Blogger and Author, Channel Happy Hour

January 14, 2020

"Thinking about..." how much we enjoyed interviewing Mike Vizard of the Channel Happy Hour podcast! Mike joins the WitzEnd team to discuss his journey with podcasting, how he manages his time as a freelancer, and what technology he is looking forward to seeing develop in the future. If you like what you’re reading, be sure to listen to the whole episode, linked at the bottom of this page.

Podcast is the new radio...

It’s no secret that consumers are listening to podcasts more now than ever. Recent reports from Edison Research claim 70 percent of Americans are familiar with the term “podcasting.” With an increase in podcast listeners, it is crucial that your clients are well prepared to have meaningful and thought-provoking conversations. We discuss this topic with Mike Vizard, a fellow podcaster and freelance writer, about what companies can do better when being interviewed. One thing that stood out to Mike was how some guests have a hard time speaking clearly and enunciating their words. It might seem like an obvious issue to prepare for, but sometimes as public relations specialists we can get so wrapped up in the messaging that we forget to discuss the etiquette of being “on-air.” He also notes to be careful not to stutter step, as it can be hard to edit out of a podcast recording and may annoy some listeners.

Mike mentioned that some of his favorite people to interview are guests that can offer more than one perspective on a topic. At Witz, we try to prepare our clients for interviews by reminding them to address the “why this matters” point of view as well as any broader trends that are happening in the market place. Going beyond the sales pitch and technical jargon will make your client stand out as a real competitor and thought leader in the industry.

Out of sight, out of mind...

We wanted to know Mike’s preference when receiving news, so we picked his brain on the best ways to reach him. In general, Mike prefers a good old-fashioned email. He explains that direct messages and text messages are out of his bandwidth because everything else is coming through the email system.

Favorite events to attend...

With so many shows to choose from, we thought we’d ask which events Mike likes to attend the most. Mike enjoys the broad-based conferences that have multiple vendors in attendance. This allows him to produce more stories, but it also means more opportunities to cultivate valuable relationships with the people in attendance. Mike wishes that more PR people would spend time building relationships with the media at industry events. PR Pro tip: plan ahead and schedule a meetup over coffee with a journalist at the next event you’re attending; don’t talk business though, make it a time where you can get to know each other better.
